ABC to air new St Elmo’s Fire

Iconic Brat Pack flick ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ is to be remade for TV screens and has been picked up by ABC.
Joel Schumacher, who directed the original film, will act as executive producer of the hour long TV show, hoped to become the new Friends. The show will follow a group of friends who just graduated from Georgetown University and are adjusting to adulthood. There will be some minor changes to the format, the series will feature six friends instead of seven and the film’s setting, St. Elmo’s Bar & Restaurant, will be upgraded to St. Elmo’s Bar & Grill.
Screenwriter Dan Bucatinsky, who will also serve as an executive producer along with actor Topher Grace, told The Hollywood Reporter:
“I feel it is time to recreate Friends in the hour-long genre and feel like this is the perfect opportunity. More than anything, the movie evokes a feeling that doesn’t go away. The feeling of bonding with your friends who become your surrogate family.”
Grace added: “It’s the feeling of that time in your life when everything is possible but you can’t figure out how to make it possible.”
I am embarrassed to admit that I have never actually seen the 1980’s version of St Elmos Fire. However given my deep love for Rob Lowe and general admiration of Emilio Estevez, I may have to seek out the dvd before the new remake comes to our screens.
