The BBC have revealed that more than 8 million viewers tuned into watch Doctor Who embark on finding his new assistant, after Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) left last series.

The first episode of the new series of the classic BBC1 sci-fi drama attracted an average of 8.2 million viewers, with a peak audience of 8.9 million.

The show, which broadcast at 7pm last night, held an audience share of 41.3%, a spokeswoman for the BBC added.

Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies described the coming episode as one of his most ambitious to date.

Our family have been anxiously awaiting the return of the Doctor for months now. And our day yesterday was spent, constantly checking watches to make sure we would be home in time for the show. I thought it was well worth the wait, and I have high hopes for The Doctors new assistant….not so sure about Reggie Yates though?
