American Idol winner Ruben Studdard to compete on The Biggest Loser

It has been a while since the American Idol Velvet Teddy Bear has been on our screens, but he’s back and well… bigger than ever!

Indeed, American Idol’s season 2 winner Ruben Studdard will return to our screens in October when he competes on the new season of… The Biggest Loser! A far cry from winning one of the biggest singing competitions in the world, right?

Studdard has had weight problems for many years and has yo-yo’d ever since American Idol. He has been trying to lose his excess weight since competing on Idol back in 2003. In 2006, he turned vegetarian and did really well for himself, shedding more than 70 pounds. In 2008 he got married and continued with the healthy lifestyle but after divorcing in 2012, he popped the weight back on.

This time around, he will try to shed the pounds again, but in front of millions of viewers from across America.

Suddard released his latest album, Letters from Birmingham, in March 2012.

The 15th cycle of The Biggest Loser kicks off on Tuesday, October 8 at 8/7c on NBC.

Meanwhile, speaking of American Idol, the show is undergoing a major shake-up before returning later this year in the new 2013/14 season on FOX. The show has been losing viewers for the past few years and the rehashed judging panel consisting of Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson just didn’t work, and it has since been confirmed none of them will be returning for the new season.

Per Blankens has also recently been hired as the new American Idol Executive Producer, following the departure of long time executives, Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick.
