Anneka Rice heading back to TV for “at least two” new shows

Fans of ‘80s show Treasure Hunt may recall that Anneka Rice was the “helicopter girl” who flew around the country for the show.

And of course, she later fronted a spin-off entitled Challenge Anneka, which aired for five years as of 1989.

Since then, Anneka has had a relatively low TV profile, though she did take part in Home Is Where The Heart Is which saw celebrities taking in homeless people to help them rebuild their lives.

However, the Daily Mirror today reports that Anneka is now looking to relaunch her career, and to that end, will star in “at least two” BBC shows.

A BBC source said, “She was a star on BBC when Challenge Anneka was on TV and was a very recognisable face on screen.

“Since then her TV work has dried up a lot but this is a big chance for her to become a start again…

“The BBC has also been hit with criticism of ageism recently, so Anneka is part of us redressing the balance and getting more older women on screen.

“They have been talking with Anneka for some time now and she will be back on screen before the end of the year.”

BBC1 Controller Danny Cohen told the Mirror, “I’ve always been a fan of Anneka’s work and I’m looking forward to developing different projects with her over the forthcoming months.”

And sources close to Anneka say she was “surprised and excited” to get the call from the BBC about making a comeback to television.

Here’s a reminder of Anneka in Challenge Anneka…
