Apparitions Will Return To BBC One

Lime Pictures has been commissioned by BBC One to produce Apparitions, a new supernatural drama series.

Starring Martin Shaw (Judge John Deed, George Gently), Apparitions was originally produced as a two-part special for transmission in early 2008. However, the two-part drama will now form part of a longer series to be transmitted later this year.

Martin Shaw plays Father Jacob, a priest working to promote candidates for sainthood who becomes drawn in to exorcism as he discovers a dark battle between good and evil. A battle that threatens the future of the human race itself.

Tony Wood, creative director of Lime Pictures, says: “Apparitions is an exceptionally unique piece and we are thrilled with the results. To have the show commissioned as a series before the two-part special has even been transmitted is a great vote of confidence from the BBC.

Anne Mensah, BBC Head of Drama, Scotland, adds: ” The opportunity to move directly to a series with Apparitions is a real testament to the vision and creativity of the team behind this unique project. The two-part special is all the things you’d want it to be, entertaining and scary but also thought provoking. It’s fantastic to be able to develop this concept across a broader canvas.”

Although there have been some minor inaccuracies (you cannot make a confession over the phone, and there is a sanctuary lampin the church and yet no tabernacle housing the Blessed Sacrament) the series so far (after two episodes) is theologically highly accurate. It makes a change to see a Catholic priest these days being portrayed as rational, reasonable, holy and humane as well as someone who has his feet very firmly planted on the ground. He acknowledges the far greater likelihood of mental healthcare problems long before he concludes that there is a case of diabolical possession. I am impressed.

    Very commendable and intelligent programme.programme.
Interesting to see the story line involving St Bartholomew (the Healer), perhaps one of the lesser known apostles (see Nathaniel). Some of the comments have queried the death of the young priest being flayed alive in a gay sauna.
The flaying refers to the way Bartholomew himself was killed.
It is believed the brother of the then Armenian King, Polymius had Bartholomew killed for converting Polymius to Christianity. It is said that Bartholomew was flayed alive, beheaded and then hung upside down.
It may be a pity that the inspired research for this fairly obscure element may not receive the full credit it deserves by the viewing public.

watched the whole series now,and thought it was excellent. The good vs evil was heart warming, as good prevailed. Martin shaws acting was outstanding, and believable. The portrayel of the exorcisms were thankfully not hollywood like, but all the same were scary.
The twists and turns were inspired.I agree the best show ive seen this year. Well done too makers and BBC.

I enjoyed the series throughout. Will there be another and if so when?

Apparitions was so good I am gibbering at the thought that it might not be recommissioned. For once, the Beeb have made a drama that gets close to America’s HBO’s top dramas in its innovation and moral ambiguity. Damn, I loved this show so much. And it was filmed in Whalley Range, Manchester. About time someone realised the Gothic potential of my area! There must be a second series, must!

  12. itchy says:

I can’t go without more Apparitions! We need another season!

From what I have read, it doesn’t seem there will be another season, but one can hope.

  13. Mike says:

There has to be a new series it’s as good if not better than the American series Supernatural

  14. Ste. Goldie says:

IT’S LIKE THE CATHOLIC X-FILES! Only better!

  15. rolio says:

it has to be recommissioned, it really does! It was so great!

does anyone know if there is going to be a series two
the words ’series one’ is ominously missing from the front cover of the dvd case.
typical bbc they occasionally hit onto a good thing so what do they do,drop it.
they hailed ’strange’ as a success – which it was – so they dropped it.
unless of course its doctor who or a spin off from it.
as long as theres plenty of chav tv about why would the rest of us want or need more than the doctors verse.
inbetween we can watch most haunted – jeeez.
thing is they have no masters to please, they dont have to worry about advertising revenue so they pick up and drop things at a whim and dont care what we think.
the fact that itv is in a financial crisis now which cannot affect the bbc will likely make them even more complacement.
