BATTLE FOR THE HOLY LAND: LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR
On the 40th anniversary of the Six-Day War Rod Liddle takes a journey through the West Bank. A firm supporter of Israel, Rod poses the question: should Israel still be considered part of the western club of democratic nations in light of its policies in the occupied territories?
Rod’s journey focuses on everyday life, rather than riots and confrontations. He meets with Palestinians in Bethlehem and the villages nearby to see how their lives are impacted by the machinery of Israeli occupation, above all the checkpoints and the new security barrier. He explores how much genuine autonomy Palestinians enjoy and examines, among other things, the issues of water and of house demolitions.
He also spends time with a Palestinian family in Hebron whose home is under threat from settlers. He then crosses the lines and visits residents of the Jewish settlement of T’qoa, near Bethlehem, to get their perspective on the conflict. They outline for him Israelis’ deep sense of insecurity and their belief that the West Bank is an integral part of the state of Israel. And he meets with Israel’s Deputy Defence Minister, Ephraim Sneh, to discuss with him what he has seen on his journey.
