BBC Three to launch Newly Meds

Newly qualified doctors are to take centre stage in an intriguing new fly-on-the-wall documentary for BBC Three. Commissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC Three, from BBC in-house Entertainment, the series Newly Meds (working title) will reveal what life is really like for the UK’s newly qualified doctors both at work and at play.

Shot in the style of a glossy medical drama, the series will follow the new recruits over a four-month period as they leave their student days behind them and embark on their careers.

Over the course of the series viewers will join them on a journey of discovery as they tackle everything from first-day nerves and wrestling drunks in A&E, to coping with their first experiences of death, delivering their first baby, performing life-saving operations and their first professional placement.

The cameras will continue to roll away from the ward as our participants learn to balance work with life, relationships and family commitments.

Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC Three, said: “Newly Meds is an exciting new project that adds to the channel’s growing portfolio of entertaining and thought-provoking documentary series.”

Karl Warner, Executive Producer, added: “There’s not many people who can really say that their first job was a matter of life and death. This series will capture what that experience can be like for a group of 20-somethings who are just as dedicated to their professional lives as they are to their social ones.”
