BBC To Relaunch Top Of The Pops
It’s being reported today that the BBC are considering the relaunch of Top Of The Pops next year due to overwhelming demand from viewers.
The show aired for the last time in July 2006 when the decision to call time on the long running series came about after viewing figures consistently fell.
However, many big name music executives have said that they’re sure the show will be back on our screens soon.
“There is only one chance for a comeback, and the programme will fail again if it returns exactly as before,” a BBC insider told The Times.
“It needs to be more populist and have exclusive content, new songs, that can be put up on YouTube and shared around the internet.”
However, Mark Cooper, head of music entertainment at the BBC is also quoted as saying, “It’s probably no longer the case that Top Of The Pops can be revived on the basis of it being an entertainment programme – instead it may have to be judged as a public service.”
Culture secretary Andy Burnham – who recently joined the fray over Laura White’s departure from X Factor – urged the BBC to bring the show back amidst claims that TV networks are “failing to support new artists.”
X Factor boss Simon Cowell also announced last month that he wanted to ensure the show didn’t stay off air permanently and even offered to buy the format from the BBC.
