BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2011 nominations open today

This year marks the 10th anniversary of BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, recognising the best in young sporting talent in the UK. 2011 nominations are open from Monday 10 October giving everyone the chance to put forward their suggestions for the award.

When this year’s winner is announced at the live BBC Sports Personality of the Year show on Thursday 22 December, they will be joining a strong list of sporting greats that have had their names etched on the trophy since its inception in 2001. The previous winners include tennis ace Andy Murray, Premier League stars Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott, as well as World Champions Tom Daley and Eleanor Simmonds.

The award is made to the outstanding young sportsperson of the year, who is aged 16 or under on 1 January 2011, selected from nominations made to the BBC and by sports governing bodies via the Youth Sport Trust.

A panel of judges will select a shortlist of 10 from the nominations received. Then they will meet again to select the final three who will be invited to attend the live BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011 show. The winner will be announced live on air at the prestigious event at MediaCityUK, Salford Quays.

Completed forms can be returned via email or post, and must be received by Monday 14 November, 2011.

The live BBC Sports Personality of the Year show takes place this year at MediaCityUK, Salford Quays on Thursday 22 December. The show will be presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Jake Humphrey.
