Its bad news for Benidorm fans we are afraid, Sheila Reid has quit her role as Madge Harvey!
Reid, who has played the overly-tanned scooter terrorist ever since the show began six series’ ago, has announced that she is to leave the show next year.
Joining her will be her on-screen grandson, Michael (Oliver Stokes) who is being written out of the hit ITV comedy when it returns nest year for its seventh series as well as Siobhan Finneran and Steve Pemberton, who plays Madge’s long-suffering daughter and son-in-law Janice and Mick Garvey who have also been confirmed as departing the show.
There is some good news though as, in light of this, there will be three familiar faces returning to the Solana – Hotel manager Janey York, played by I’m A Celebrity contestant Crissy Rock, and mother and son team Noreen and Geoff (the Oracle) Maltby, with both roles being reprised by their original actors Elsie Kelly and comedian Johnny Vegas.
Geoff was last seen on Benidorm planning to move in with Mick and Janice’s daughter, Chantelle (Hannah Hobley), and the pair have been frequently mentioned on the show since, but at this time there is no word that Hobley will be returning with her on-screen boyfriend.
The Sun newspaper quotes a show source as saying on the subject:
“It’s a huge shame the Garveys are leaving because they’ve been in every series and the fans love them, but writer Derren Litten is excited about their exit storyline.
“He wants them to leave with a bang — though he’ll definitely leave the door open for them to return.
“And it’s exciting to have Johnny, Crissy and Elsie back on the scene.”
The source went on to say how, in light of the popularity of the last series’ famous guest appearances including Joan Collins and Matthew Kelly, they intend to keep that up in the new series, explaining:
“Last year we had Joan Collins — and we’re determined to top that.”
