Best soap storylines 2008

This year has seen some brilliant and controversial storylines in our top three soaps, and it’s a close call as to which has been the best.

Jase's funeralIn Eastenders we’ve had Bianca’s return followed by the abuse storyline between her partner Tony and step-daughter Whitney.

In addition, there was Jase’s death which was mourned by women the land over and nearly as tear jerking as Wellard’s demise.

There’s also been the Roxy and Sean story that’s simmered away for months with a will-he-find-out edge to it.

In Emmerdale, Andy’s violence towards Jo nearly cost him his life and a Laurel, Hilary and baby Danieldash to find villain Freddy nearly cost Donna hers.

Baby Daniel died and just as the Thomas’s were trying to cope with that, they found out that he wasn’t their biological child.

Then in the last couple of months, nasty plod Shane was murdered following his attempted rape of Jasmine Thomas.

Rosie and JohnOver in Coronation Street, Vera passed away last New Year and later, Liam was murdered by Tony Gordon who in the last month, has gone on to attempt to murder Jed Stone and it’s yet to be revealed whether the mithery old man is in Wigan or if Tony bumped him off.

Loopy ex-teacher John took our Wozey hostage in his Gran’s attic.

So which gets your vote at the best storyline?

For controversy value, the Tony-Whitney story is my number one while for tissue usage, Vera’s death and that of baby Daniel is my joint number one.Donna and Ross's car crash

For scary cliffhangerness, the Shane-Jasmine plot has had me nearly on the edge of my seat while my award for excellent effects goes to Emmerdale for Donna’s car crash.

I can’t wait to see what next year has in store for us in the soaps, especially what’s going to happen with Tony Gordon next as well as the current storyline in Eastenders involving Sean and Roxy.

I hope Emmerdale ups its game this coming year though because despite the great effects during Donna’s crash and the latest murder plot, it’s been decidedly tame this year I think. Yes, there’s been lots of deaths and intrigues but somehow, it’s just not ‘done it’ for me this year.

Roll on 2009!
