US singer-songwriter Bette Midler recently confirmed dates of a new tour to coincide with her new album ‘It’s The Girls’ set for July of next year.
However it isn’t her new shows that have seen the Beaches actress hitting the headlines today. No Midler has pushed herself to the fore of the internet, after making some less than complimentary comments about pint-sized pop star Ariana Grande.
It’s fair to say that the Bang Bang singer has changed a lot since her children’s TV days and she’s rarely seen now without a basque and big pants, when she’s giving a live performance.
Bette Midler clearly isn’t a fan of the new mature look and in a new interview with The Telegraph it’s made clear that the veteran doesn’t think Grande is making the right choices in her career.
“It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch,” Midler said.
She added: “Looking so ridiculous. I mean it’s silly beyond belief and I don’t know who’s telling her to do it. I wish they’d stop.”
“But it’s not my business, I’m not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that’s what you’ve got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold.”
Bette also had some advice for young people in the industry and told them to trust in their ‘talent’ without feeling the need to ‘whore’ themselves out for the sake of headlines, and column inches.
Middler also thinks the music industry could do with being brightened up in general and admitted that while she has enjoyed a varied career, which has included singing, acting and comedy, there are very few all rounders in the charts any more.
“Nowadays, “the comics don’t make music and the musicians don’t make comedy, which is so wrong. In the old days everybody did everything, and that was the best way to do it.” she added.
What do you think about Bette Midler’s comments on Ariana Grande? Is she right or is that just the world we live in today where that’s considered the norm? Let us know your thoughts below.
