In Channel 4’s hit show Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, much is made of the morality of Travellers, however, as with any sector of society, there’s always some bad apples in the collective cart…
And in the case of Traveller Paddy Doherty, one of the extremely bad apples in his family is 18 year Chantelle Doherty who has been imprisoned after a court heard that she headed up a vicious gang who tortured, beat and robbed their victims.
The Sun reports that Chantelle was the leader of a “gypsy gang of ladettes” who, in one horrifying incident, “head-butted a young boy, forced fizzy pop down another terrified lad’s throat as he was gasping for breath and poured alcohol over another as he begged for mercy.”
In another attack, a girl of just 8 years old was pushed and shoved by the gang who robbed her of her mobile phone.
Another young female victim was allegedly told, “If you call the police, we’ll kill you, we’re gypsies” before she too was robbed…
Yesterday, Doherty, of Salford, began 16 months’ youth custody after she admitted robbery, and a 15 year-old girl accomplice was given six months’ detention. Three other girls aged between 16 and 17 got four months.
At Manchester Crown Court yesterday, Prosecutor Michael Morley said, “Whilst all these robberies were mean throughout, there was an additional degree of violence shown by Chantelle Doherty.”
He added, “Chantelle Doherty made a threat to the girl that effectively if she didn’t hand over her property she’d be thrown through a window.
“She was frightened and handed over her iPod. The victim was then asked if she had a mobile phone and she handed that over.
“When she did the 14-year-old snatched it out of her hand. With that Chantelle Doherty said, ‘If you call the police, we’ll kill you, we’re gypsies.’
“The girl made her way down the street and she was crying.”
In sentencing Doherty, Judge Jeffrey Lewis said, “These offences are shocking, disgusting and nasty, nobody has sought to argue against that.”
