The scripts for the new series may have already been written, but ITV have decided to axe its code-breaking drama The Bletchley Circle, and in the most awful of ways!
Now we all know there are certain rules when it comes to dumping someone, and by email is definitely at the top of ways not to do it!
But one of the stars of The Bletchley Circle, Rachel Stirling, has revealed this was precisely the way that she, and her show co-stars, were informed that their services were no longer required.
The Bletchley Circle followed four women who, in 1952, worked as codebreakers at Bletchley Park, investigating a series of murders that the police apparently overlooked.
The first series of the mini-series was received well, so well in fact that it was picked up for a second series and broadcast in America on PBS.
However, according to bosses the second series did not bring in the viewing figures desired so the powers that be decided to pull the plug on the show, despite the third series having already been penned.
And according to Rachel Stirling, who played Millie in the show, the cast were all very surprised to learn this news via email!
Speaking To Kate Garraway about the shocking development on ITV chat show Lorraine, the actress revealed:
“We (the cast) have received emails telling us that there isn’t going to be another series of The Bletchley Circle.
“It’s a great shame because we really enjoyed filming it and scripts were already being prepared for series three.
“Sadly, the overnights weren’t good enough and the series has been cancelled.”
Meanwhile the Sun newspaper quotes a show source as confirming the news:
“The cast, crew and writers had a great time filming The Bletchley Circle and are, of course, disappointed it isn’t coming back.
“But unfortunately it just didn’t pull in the audience that ITV were hoping for.”
