Blood, Sweat And Takeaways – BBC Three

When it comes to food, the Brits are spoilt for choice. Many simply take it for granted that it’s possible to buy whatever food they want, whenever they want it, all year round. But what about the human cost of producing all this cheap food for our convenience?

In the follow-up to the Bafta-nominated BBC Three series Blood, Sweat And T-shirts, six young British consumers travel to South East Asia to see just what’s involved in producing the food they take for granted. The intrepid six are fussy eater Jess (19), fast-food fan Manos (20), fitness fanatic Olu (25), luxury food lover Lauren (21), keen cook Josh (20) and ethical shopper Stacey (20).

They must catch, harvest and process food products that are eaten every day in the UK, as they go behind the scenes of the tuna, prawn, rice and chicken industries. They also eat, sleep and live with the food workers in the poorest regions of Indonesia and Thailand and see how they fare living on the same wage – the average for such workers being around £3 a day.

In tonight’s first instalment, the Brits enter Indonesia’s tuna industry in Bitung, on the island of Sulawesi. In the UK, over a billion tins of tuna are consumed each year and Bitung’s canneries supply many of our supermarkets and sandwich chains.

Living with the workers in their basic conditions, the Brits endure the 90-degree heat of the tuna canneries and struggle with the harsh realities of life on a traditional wooden tuna boat in the Western Pacific. The extreme conditions affect them all – as does the hand-to-mouth existence of those they are living with.

After seeing the reality, will biting into a tuna sandwich ever be the same again?

Next week, the food lovers journey on to live and work alongside workers in the prawn industry.

  10. Azzy129 says:

That Olu is such a bully and p**t the way he touched that other shorter guy on the chin then pushed him in to a window smashing it on him. He deserves a slap.

  11. SpheareD says:

I have to say i was absolutely shocked by the last show! I was brought up in a nasty area and as a child/teeneager had to put up with power hungry scum bags like olu. Im grown up now and ill like to say this. Bring those big muscles you prck! He started off having no right of which he should be on tablets just for having that much of an issue. secondly who the fk was he to touch anyone let alone act like his a big man. Oly if your reading this (unlikely) i mean this due to dealing with your thuggish kind all my teenage life. I really do hope you are found bleeding to death in an Alley somewhere or on a organ donner list via a bath tub with ice. The show should have kicked and banned his ass the second he started acting like a anally buggered lion. Also one last message to the Ct that ruined the show, Steroids don’t make you a man, you need a penis for that ;) and then even those with a penis act like pricks :)

  12. kstar says:

I can not believe the way this guy Olu behaved!! What an absolute control freak. I was in shook!!
Who does he think he is???What a bully!!!!!!

  13. Smithy says:

Olu is a … see you next tuesday.

Yes. What a comple and utter bully/ What a sad pathetic man. Obviously spending time in the gym to build some self esteem from being bullied as a young boy or something.

I hope watchdog interview him to bring him down a peg. I agree he needs a slap. Perhaps needs to go to Channel 4 boot camp show.

    Glad they booted him out.

    What a C*”!T

  14. someguy says:

  19. lozkina says:

Olu great example what the steriods do to the head I know Iv been there, the guy is no different to a wild animal

  20. Andy Hughes says:

I don’t know why you people are surprised. He was your typical black animal.

  21. SpheareD says:

*** PREPARE FOR SOME REALITY ***

OK so with out the racism i would have to agree. Andy your SO Fking right mate. People tip toe over the subject to not seem racist but fk you all here i go. You people act shocked when 9/10 Gangsta wannabees act like this on a daily basis. How many people get mugged in the streets by wnkr’s like Olu?????

If we complain about it we racists? sorry but unless its part of your religion you dont walk around the street looking like some gun who gangsta with hood and scarf.

Chav’s you avoid but HHHHHHHWWWWWWWWRRRRRUUUUUDE boys wont be avoided.

It’s shows like this that make me strongly believe that i should have got a knife and gone nuts when i lived in Tottenham.

Would have got a few atleast and made atleast one streets worth a easier street to live.

Andy any time your on the verge of letting go you have me by your side ;)

Will go around as quick as possible through london Hacking and Slashing at anythng that walks with a limp pants to its ankles or generally trying to walk the streets looking hard.

So factual rant has finished over to you Harvy the invisible rabbit ;)

  22. amaka says:

I have to say as a Nigerian and a Londoner I am disgusted by Olu’s behaviour. When I saw the shows line up I was happy there was a black guy on it, and I hoped he would represent black people in a very positive way on the show. Disappointingly he couldn’t even last one full episode due to violent behaviour. I can’t believe a 25 year old adult let such an insignificant issue affect him and lead him to act that way! Olu if you are reading this, I would advise you to seek help for anger control. I am sure your actions are a result of your upbringing because that’s just not normal behaviour for an adult.

  23. jim says:

I bet the big lump had ROID rage ( steroid abuse)

  24. Paul says:

Olu shows classic steroid abuse How did he get on that show

  25. Aroona says:

Coming from a ethnic minority background hard work and labour is part of life. Manos has forgotten his ancestors just because his father has come to Britain it does not make Manos english. These are the circumstances he would have faced if he was born back home. He has no right to disgrace the way of life these people live in. It is obvious he has not visited his native land and has forgotten his roots, wake up Manos you come from a third world country so do not show yourself up. Anybody who teaches you a skill no matter in what subject deserves respect not attitude if you can not hack realty quit the show. Are you there for the fame.

  28. Roa says:

That was really unreasonable and unfortunate behaviour. Hope he learns his lesson.

  29. Andrew says:

The show is very eye opening and certainly gives a balanced view of consumerism and its origins and effects.

  30. Lianne says:

  32. gna-kick olu's-ass says:

Andy and sphereD i agree completely, his on steroids for sure, now i think he was also a bit of a racist, and picking on a man half your size..he was surly bullied as a kid in school.i know if i or any one sees him..he will get a beating for acting like that..complete utter animal..should be ashamed,,,,nothing will help him but a beating it will bring him down to earth.

i hope i see him…il tell him his scared of me..and than kick his ass.

  33. joey maguire says:

manos is a lazy spoilt prick they should have kicked him off for cheating not olu for giving manos the treatment he deserves! manos has been nothing but dead weight to the team since! i find it hard to watch manos as a person

  34. Paul Crawford says:

This programme is a good eye opener for our present cushy life in the UK. It helps remind us that we are fortunate. Stacey is lovely. If you read this Stacey you are lovely

  35. Ace says:

Olu is a typical black person doesnt understand english and thinks he can do what he likes, manos should have got a knife and stabbed him

  36. Ace says:

    Manos needs to toughen up

  37. Stacey says:

Thanks Paul! I don’t know what i’ve done to offend some of the others on here! Bit over the top Louise and Sarah! haha

  38. max says:

louise and sarah, you two are twats. how is stacey a moany brat. how about you two try and do what they done and see how much you like it.

  39. Alan says:

    Stacy, you are so pulchritudinous…

  40. dave says:

I just watched the last episode of blood sweat and take aways I cant believe those poor people have to live like that, It is utterly the most saddest thing I have ever watched but the sad thing is its because of our own supermarkets exploiting these people, I will never buy a chicken not after seeing all those 140,000 birds just mass culled. I just wish I could speak to the people that went there I am a young person like them I wish I could help them in some way! We are so lucky to have what we have even if we complain we never have any money at least we see our children every day and sleep in a bed.

  41. Sam says:

I think Stacey is lovely too. I understand why people were harsh towards her at the beginning, but she changed and understood the people and what is going on out there, and the journey to that must be the whole point?

  42. Stacey says:

haha, Alan, your too kind! Hey, at least it’s got people talking about these issues, that’s the point of the show! Obviously you are seeing an edited version of the show, which is easy to forget! However for an awful lot of people, watching this has been an eye opener, experiencing it certainly was! So either way, thanks for watching x

  43. Maciek says:

I just finished watching the last episode… I think Stacey is a person I could talk to all night long :) If you read this Stacey and if you want to mail me I’d be sooooo happy :) mhood9@yahoo.com Thing is – I don’t agree with all Stacy’s views but I have so much respect for her as a person… Stacey – you are the man :) that’s my opinion…

  44. Lawro says:

I’d just like to leave a message to say that I (along with my mum and sister, dad thought it was rubbish) thourougly enjoyed the series and was really proud that the Brits gave it thier all doing the work of the local people in the various places visited during the series, especially Josh, Stacey and James! 10/10
Oh and an extra * for Stacey for standing up agianst that rather insulting American chap in the last episode, that must have took a lot of guts.
    Very good viewing. :)

  45. Devin says:

What an amazing series! It’s great to see tv shows that can really make a positive difference! Hopefully people can see over the team politics to the real issues, and put aside their disgusting racist views.

Stacey, keep up the amazing work! The more people we have campaigning on these important issues, the more difference we can make!

  46. alastair says:

    Stacey

I have watched the last two weeks and I must congratulate James and yourself for your efforts.

Standing up to that idiot was brave and taking the chicken worker back home was kind.

    Well done you.

    Alastair

  47. Alex Parker Walklate says:

I think that the programme missed the point a bit here. Seemed like the blame for poor worker conditions was put on western consumers. But short of buying fair-trade (which is only available on a few products) theres not a lot we can do. Almost all of the blame should be placed on the large “middle men” companies like the supermarkets, who, force the Taiwanese and Indonesian production companies to reduce costs, with methods such as illustrated on the programme. I don’t know why people on here are having a go at Stacey, she was the one who sympathised with the workers! The other girls seemed spoilt to me, and Manos… god I want to punch him!

  48. em says:

James was definitely the most hard working, he deserves a medal! Stacey was a bit annoying at first, but she actually did help the workers. Josh was too wingey! Manos was a dck, he was soooooo in love with himself.

  49. Claire says:

I think all of the guys and girls in the show should be proud of the way the show has raised awareness of those issues. As James realised towards the end, its all well and good buying local, but then what happens to the rest of the international food industry? Sometimes we just need to open our minds a bit more.

In the last episode, they said that Stacey has written an article about what they did, does anyone know where i can read a copy?

  50. Edward says:

Wanna say that I loved and totally enjoyed the whole series n its given me an insight into how the food industry affects other people in the world. Stacey’s comment keeps coming into my head whenever I go food shopping “the migrants to bangkok are connected to the food industry”. Thanks Stacey 4 dat phrase.
Personally I think Manos was annoying but i ain’t guna judge or blame him cos to my family n friends, i’m not really d african type, more western lyk Manos if u see my point. I wudn’t have complained even though it weren’t comfortable but at least I’m guna get d job done. You guys making the show have earned my respect or as Josh would say “Hats off to u”. Luv y’all
PS: Disappointed in Olu…. tut tut
