‘Bones’ fans got the shock of their lives during last night’s season 10 premiere.
Without warning, the FOX show killed off (SPOILER!) Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley), who has been a main cast member since season three.
In last night’s shocking twist, whilst Sweets tried to collect evidence against the FBI Conspiracy case that got Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) sent to prison, he was viciously beaten to death. Making the moment even more devastating for fans was the character’s earlier interaction with Daisy Wick (Carla Gallo). The couple finally reconciled and found out that they were expecting a child.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner and executive producer Stephen Nathan admitted that the decision to kill off Sweets “was a devastating thing to do. We were in a strange situation… and we wound up handling it in the most painful way imaginable.” He added to TVLine that the decision was “complicated and very difficult.”
However, Nathan did admit that the storyline allowed show writers to take the Booth in prison storyline to new depths. “We realized that this fit in very well with the conspiracy arc” he said. “It gives us something very rich and very emotional to play within the first half of the season. Everybody’s affected very deeply by this. And it also seemed to be a surprising way to start the season.”
But it sounds like it’s not just the characters who are upset by the show’s most recent departure. Nathan revealed that Daley’s last day on set was “very sad” adding that “there were a lot of tears shed on the set.” The actor himself admitted to USAToday that he cried after filming his final scene.
According to reports, the decision to kill off Daley’s character came so that he could spend more time on other projects. Over the past few years, the actor has turned his hand at both directing and writing, working on ‘The Incredible Burt Wonderstone’, ‘Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2’,
‘Horrible Bosses 2’ and the upcoming film, ‘Vacation’.
‘Bones’ will continue next Thursday night at 8pm ET on FOX.
