Britannia High: A Review

I actually missed the launch of ITV1’s newest musical drama, Britannia High on Sunday evening but after reading a few stories today claiming that it got off to a poor start, ratings wise, I played it back tonight to see why the anti-climax occured.

The show was hyped before launch, some would say over-hyped, but I actually thought the show lived up to my expectations. I was drawn in from the start by the catchy music, courtesy of Gary Barlow, and by the story of Lauren the underdog.

Lauren was the only pupil admitted to Britannia High stage school without an audition. When her fellow pupils found out that she only gained her place after a school boss heard her sing at a wedding, she faced the wrath of some of the more bitchy performers.

Lauren can’t really dance and is not a seasoned performer like the rest of the group. She is from a small random town and like a fish out of water in the bright light’s of London. But by the end of the first episode she’d already got the man and displayed her superior vocal skills.

I will definitely be watching the second episode of the show this Sunday, and this time I’ll make sure to let my tweenage daughter enjoy it with me! She loves High School Musical and Hairspray, I reckon this will be right up her street!
