Olivia Colman, star of the new hit ITV drama series Broadchurch, has revealed her biggest challenge in filming the show has been fighting away fans from co-star David Tennant.
Olivia, who stars as Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller in the hit series which investigates the murder of an 11-year-old boy in the close-knit seaside town, this has admitted to the Sun newspaper how she was shocked by the number of fans flocking to see David filming.
David Tennant, who found his popularity skyrocketing after playing the iconic role of Doctor Who before current Time Lord Matt Smith, is quite clearly used to the hype surrounding him. However, as Colman admits, she was quite taken aback by just how much attention he received.
Discussing a recent incident onset, the actress described how she had to jump to her co-stars defence while he found himself in a rather compromising position.
Explaining to the publication, Colman said:
“He is the nicest man in the world, but he gets crowds of people wherever he goes. I’m afraid I got a little bit defensive on his behalf. He was trying to put a microphone on down through his shirt and through his trousers.
“This woman just took a photo right in front of his face.
“He was trying to be charming, but he had his hands down his pants. I put my arm out and said, ‘No!’
“She was a bit surprised. I don’t think she was expecting him to have protection.”
Broadchurch stars Tennant as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy who leads the investigation into the mysterious death of Danny Latimer, who is discovered on a beach at the foot of a cliff at the seaside community of Broadchurch. The investigation takes in the boy’s parents and the residents of the town who come under the media spotlight – threatening to reveal secrets and betrayals.
