On Thursday 21 April 21 at 9pm, Sky Atlantic HD will premiere WISHFUL DRINKING, the raw and intoxicating true story of Carrie Fisher’s life, captured in a feature length HBO documentary.
Adapted from her memoir into a hit stage play, and directed and performed by her, WISHFUL DRINKING reminds us that there is far more to Fisher’s fascinating legacy than Star Wars.
Recorded in Orange County, New Jersey, this 75-minute no-holds-barred documentary is refreshingly real. Opening with “Hi, I’m Carrie Fisher and I’m an Alcoholic,” Fisher is not afraid to confront her demons and tackle the tragedies of her life head on; waking up next to the dead body of a male friend is among her earliest anecdotes – a wretched and candidly recounted tale that sets the tone for all that follows.
Disarmingly blunt and uncommonly wry, Fisher laughs – and invites the audience to laugh – at her pitfalls and missteps. Taboo subjects roll easily off her tongue as normally off limits topics are offered up with a smile and a joke. Delving into her family tree – which reads like a who’s-who of Hollywood royalty – she speaks frankly about her parents, actress Debbie Reynolds and crooner Eddie Fisher as well as their subsequent significant others from the late Elizabeth Taylor, to musician Paul Simon whom Fisher married, and scandalous anecdotes are peppered throughout the genealogical exploration. Her own life is not exempt from the same treatment.
From Stardom to divorce, re-marriage to the death of a close friend, addiction to mental illness and medication, Fisher recounts her peaks and valleys in her own pragmatic, witty way. The result is frank brilliance as Fisher sums it up “Most of us seem to find heaven by backing away from hell.”
WISHFUL DRINKING, Fisher’s one woman touring and Broadway play was filmed by HBO in front of a live audience, created and written by Fisher and produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. WISHFUL DRINKING, Thursday 21 April at 9pm, Sky Atlantic HD and Sky Atlantic.
