40 Things You Probably Didn’t Know & Probably Don’t Need To: TV Trivia!

question mark

Nothing fascinates me like finding out daft and pointless stuff that has no bearing on anything; it’s just the sort of thing that makes you go “Oh, did not know that!” and then carry on with your life…

Well, in the spirit of that ‘total waste of timeage’, here are 40 facts and bits of TV, film and celebrity trivia which may come in handy if you’re bored stiff in the office and for possibly a pub quiz, but little else probably!

So, let’s go with the Bet You Didn’t Know That list…. Read more & comment »

Last Night’s TV - Mamma Mia: Where Did It All Go Right?

mamma-mia

I have to admit, I’m probably one of about only ten people in the entire Western hemisphere who hasn’t watched the film Mamma Mia, but last night’s Five documentary about the phenomenal success of the film was interesting enough - thought not exactly gripping - as it revealed how the three women behind the movie’s production “battled the might of Hollywood to make their dream a reality”.

It also told how boozy parties on the set helped to make the movie into the massive success it was and is… and I can believe it. Let’s face it, there’s not much a boozy party doesn’t improve.

Mamma Mia is the biggest grossing movie of all in time in the UK and apparently, one in every four households owns a copy of the DVD … but I’m one of the three who doesn’t. Around the world 17,000 people watch the stage version every night it plays and in Britain, the movie’s taken over £68 million at the box office… Read more & comment »

Last Night’s TV - Five Minutes of Heaven

five minutes of heaven

In 1975, 17 year old Alistair Little, a member of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), murdered a 19 year old Catholic, Jim Griffin by ruthlessly firing three bullets into his head. This happened at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland in a town called Lurgan.

The crime was witnessed by Jim’s younger brother Joe, who was just 11 at the time and shockingly, Jim and Joe’s mother, to the day she died, blamed Joe for not preventing the murder of his brother.

Alistair Little was subsequently arrested two weeks later and spent over 12 years in prison. He’s since become a prominent and ardent peace campaigner but as we were to discover, he has yet to overcome the burden of guilt at what he did… Read more & comment »

Stupidest & weirdest TV shows and titles

super-robot-monkey-team-hyperforce-go

I was recently messing about on t’internet, as you do, and came across details of a kid’s show entitled Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! So this got me wondering how many other shows have similarly ludicrous titles or content… and there are quite a few of them, so I thought I’d share just a few of my findings with you lovely peeps!

So let’s start with Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! It’s a cartoon that’s set mainly on the fictional planet of Shugazoom which follows the adventures of five robotic monkeys and a human boy named Chiro as they struggle to protect their planet - and the rest of the universe - from the forces of evil. Yes, it really is as bad as it sounds too. It’s one of those annoying anime things where they constantly shout and their mouths form huge O shapes when they ’speak’. But there’s more weirdness than that even… Read more & comment »

Monday

The Real Pink Panther: Lord Victor Hervey, 8:00pm, Channel 4

the-real-pink-pantherThe final film in Channel 4’s Toffs and Crims series, which explores the affinity between the upper echelons of society and the criminal underclass.

Victor Hervey, the sixth Marquis of Bristol, masterminded a gang of career criminals and then found himself at the Old Bailey on two counts of jewel theft.

It has long been believed that, when he was convicted in 1939 and sentenced to three years penal servitude, this was the end of Victor’s criminal ways. However, recently declassified police documents reveal that after he was released Victor may still have been involved in crime… Read more & comment »

Primetime Picks of this week’s TV

dispatches-s4e1_200x113
This week’s Primetime Picks are dominated by documentaries in the main! But they do look really interesting…

On Monday we kick off with Dispatches: The Problem Princes, 8:00pm on Channel 4 presented by Alex Thomson which investigates the roles currently adopted by the royal princes and asks how their activities are shaping the modern monarchy that Prince William will inherit.

Thomson delves into just how transparent the Royals’ finances are, both in relation to what they cost the tax payer and concerning some of the older princes’ personal business and property dealings.

Thomson also examines claims that the Palace are not averse to media manipulation, investigating the handling of stories such as William’s commandeering of an RAF helicopter to visit a stag party on the Isle of Wight and for a visit to his girlfriend’s parents… Read more & comment »

Primetime Picks of next week’s TV

the-gangster-and-the-perverted-peer

Monday has a rather interesting offering on Channel 4 at 9pm in the form of a documentary intriguingly entitled, The Gangster and the Pervert Peer. It centres on the story that in 1964, the Sunday Mirror made “lurid allegations” of a homosexual relationship between “a peer and a gangster”

Rumour had it that Tory Lord Bob Boothby had been attending illegal gay sex parties - organised by notorious underworld boss Ronnie Kray - seemed certain to wreck their chances of re-election… Read more & comment »

Primetime Picks of next week’s TV

There are some cracking shows on this week so let’s take a look at our picks of the highlights coming our goggle box way…

On Monday, a Tonight special focuses on Violent Partners. On ITV1 at 8pm, this no-holds-barred documentary, Fiona Foster investigates why – five years after the introduction of a bill designed to crack down on domestic abuse – the violence is as widespread as ever. Fiona also meets the victims who feel they were betrayed by the courts.

Also on Monday, Doctors in the Death Zone follows an intrepid – or crazy – group of doctors as they embark on a scientific expedition to Mount Everest in the hope that the results of their experiments may lead to a better understanding of the human body. It’s on at 9pm on new channel Eden… Read more & comment »

Primetime picks of next week’s TV

It’s looking like a great week’s viewing is coming our way so here’s Primetime’s picks of what to stay in for.

suranne_jones

We kick off with the second part of Unforgiven on Monday at 9pm, ITV1.

This show got off to a really strong start last week and if you missed it, it’s well worth catching up on ITV’s player so that you aren’t out of the loop tomorrow night.

Suranne Jones is excellent in this role and this week, her character’s problems intensify as she struggles to keep hold of her new relationship and continues to search for her sister.

Another show that looks pretty interesting is Born Survivors – My 22 Stone Dad and Skinny Me which is also on tomorrow on BBC3 at 10:30pm.. Read more & comment »
