CBBC and CBeebies triumph at 2007 Children’s BAFTAs
The BBC children’s team is celebrating success today after winning ten awards at the British Academy Children’s Awards, which took place in London last night (Sunday 25 November).
CBeebies, headed by Creative Director Michael Carrington, won the Channel of the Year Award, which recognises innovation, commissioning, creative scheduling, impact on viewers and ratings success. CBeebies also enjoyed further success with the enormously popular and groundbreaking In The Night Garden, which won the Pre-school Live Action Award.
CBBC, under the guidance of Creative Director Anne Gilchrist, won eight awards including:
* Best Drama – That Summer Day
The programme told the story of the July 7 bomb attacks in London from the point of view of children who had experienced them.
* Best Factual – Newsround’s The Wrong Trainers
The show turned real life children’s stories about child poverty into short animated films.
* Best Presenter – Barney Harwood
Barney has grown to become one of CBBC’s most loved presenters, appearing on Prank Patrol and Sorcerers Apprentice and he is now preparing for a major new Saturday morning project which is due to air in the New Year.
* Best Entertainment – The Slammer
A variety show with a difference. Set in a fictional prison, the inmates (an eclectic mix of acts) performed to an audience of children in a bid to earn enough votes for freedom.
Plus:
* Writer – Bridget Hurst for Charlie And Lola
* Pre-school Animation Award – Charlie And Lola
* The Interactive Award – The Secret Show
* Animation Award – The Secret Show
Richard Deverell, Controller, BBC Children’s, said: “I’m thrilled that the distinctiveness, creativity and originality of our programmes have been acknowledged by these awards. At a time when people are concerned about children’s television, this is a ringing endorsement for the success of BBC Children’s investment in this sector.”
