Channel 4’s press release about the documentary reads…
Piecing together the evidence, this special one-off film for Channel 4 is going to explore the events leading up to this enormous cruise ship hitting a sandbar off the Italian island of Giglio Porto with devastating consequences.
With a capacity of 3780 passengers and at an impressive 290m long and 31m high, the ship was a palace of the ocean. So how did this boat, hailed as a glorious example of modern technology sink?
The film will also show never before seen amateur footage of the accident unfolding, as well as interviews with survivors, to show a timeline of the incident.
In addition, the actions of Concordia’s captain, Francesco Schettino, will be discussed to try to discover why the ship ran aground, and why the captain subsequently abandoned the ship and his passengers.
He is presently under house arrest after being charged with suspected manslaughter.
