Channel 4 to realise hidden abilities

Channel 4 Specialist Factual Commissioning Editor Tanya Shaw has commissioned Silver River to make a 6 x 60 minute ad-funded series exploring the potentially life-changing latent abilities which may be hidden inside any one of us.

Rigorous testing of hundreds of people from all around the country will uncover physical, mental, sensory or creative talents and will be overseen by scientists and academics.

From this initial large-scale testing, a number of individuals will be identified as having special talents of which they were totally unaware.

They will then be given the opportunity to train and develop these talents to take on extraordinary challenges which might change the rest of their lives.

Presenter Richard Bacon uncovers the amazing science which enables these individuals to achieve what others can only dream of and looks at the real world application of these skills as well as following the progress of each of them as they test their new-found abilities to the limit.

These talents range from the mammalian diving reflex which enables some people to hold their breath for upwards of four minutes to dive to a depth of 60 metres without scuba gear, to latent linguistic skills that allow an individual to become fluent in a foreign language in just a few months, or could be an extraordinary sense of direction which allows someone to become a Human Sat-Nav, capable of finding their way through an unchartered wilderness.

Shaw says: “This cross-platform commission presents an exciting opportunity not only for the individuals featured in the series but also for the audience at home who can take part in a series of specially-designed interactive tests online on the show’s website to uncover their own hidden potential.”

The series producer is Spencer Kelly. Silver River CEO Daisy Goodwin says: “This is the show for anyone who has ever thought they must good at something. We are finding people with amazing aptitudes they knew nothing about – one person said it was like discovering you had a superpower.

“This is one of the most inspirational shows I have ever worked one and I guarantee that everyone watching will want to take the tests themselves.

“In business terms it has been a fascinating journey – creating the first fully ad-funded prime-time show for Channel 4. It’s a new world for me as a producer but a fascinating one.”
