In case you missed it, things between House (Hugh Laurie) and his boss/regular squeeze Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) did not end well at the end of last season. Suffice to say, he parked his car in her living room and wandered off to a tropical beach while she yelled at a cop to throw his ass in jail.
Well, judging by the teaser poster that’s just been released for Season 8 of the show, the obnoxious Doctor House may be about to get his comeuppance. The poster shows the silhouette of House up against a black chalkboard (or wall?), with his cane leaning against it. And even though we don’t get to see House’s face or that hangdog expression he sometimes uses, it looks like he might be in jail, counting the days until he returns to Princeton Plainsboro. Because they’ve got no choice but to give him his job back, right?
They can’t hold being a homicidal maniac against him!
The guys over at TVLine published the poster earlier today, and they’re brimming with theories about what the marks on the chalkboard mean. They certainly don’t follow the standard 1-2-3-4 with a strikeout on the fifth pattern. It could either be a subtle tip of the hat to Fox stablemate Bart Simpson’s famous lines at the start of each Simpsons episode. Or it could be that there’s a message to fill in those blanks. Or it could be a string of letter “H” running into each other.
The incredibly well-connected Michael Slezak suggests that there’s a message in there:
With the premiere titled “20 Vicodin,” I wonder if that’s how many pills House was able to smuggle into prison, or score during his prison stay. If so, he’d have had to go through long stretches of sobriety to make the supply last, so perhaps each of the rows on the chalkboard represents his longest Vicodin-free periods. Note that the rows do not all contain the same number of lines, which is somewhat peculiar in and of itself. There’s 15 in one row, 17 in another, etc., and 112 total.
Is this getting your brain buzzing? The more we think about it, the more it makes sense that there’s some reason why the lines are irregular. We just can’t think what it might be. Hopefully more clues will arrive soon!
