There aren’t many things can raise a smile on a wet Wednesday in Widnes – or indeed, Derbyshire, which is where I am currently located – but hearing that Scouse leg ends Cilla Black and Paul O’Grady are to star together in a sitcom is, for me at any rate, one of the things that can…

The iconic entertainers have teamed up for Led Astray, a sitcom that’s destined for the BBC and which was penned by other telly legends Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, who formerly brought us gentle comedies Birds of a Feather and Goodnight Sweetheart among a host of others.

Here’s what Cillablack.com has to say of the show…

For the plot Cilla’s character Tanya discovers she has a long lost half-brother Arthur (Paul O’Grady) who is currently serving time in HM Prison Wymott. Upon his release, Arthur stays with his newly found half-sister Tanya. Prepare for a lorra, lorra laughs as the story between the siblings unfolds!

Though both Cilla and Paul are arguably best known for their presenting skills, they’re from the old school of entertainment where general all-rounders were born. In the seventies, Cilla starred in, and won critical acclaim for, one of six half-hour situation comedy plays, and she later went on to star in Cilla’s World of Comedy.

Paul has of course recently filmed a role in Holby City – in which he played a patient dying of cancer – and regularly appears in panto as well as hosting a variety of chat shows. And his ITV show For the Love of Dogs has been a huge hit with viewers.

Here’s a reminder of Cilla and Paul performing together on his chat show…
