Clare Balding is to replace Julia Bradbury on ‘Countryfile’

It’s been announced today that 40-year-old Clare Balding will replace Julia Bradbury as the host of the BBC’s Countryfile.

The show, famed for its in-depth look at British country life, is also presented by Matt Baker. Claire will co-host while Julia is on maternity leave. She is due to give birth in August.

A BBC source said: “This is a big job for Clare. She is passionate about the countryside and is a perfect replacement for Julia short or long term.”

A BBC spokesperson also said they are “looking forward” to Julia returning when she felt it was time to do so.

The spokesperson added, “Clare will be on screen from August. We look forward to Julia rejoining when she feels ready.”

Julia – who’s previously presented walking programmes in both Germany and Iceland for the BBC – revealed earlier this year that she would likely take some time out with partner Gerard Cunningham when she had her child.

She said: “I’ll cut down my commitments when I become a mum. I don’t want to get a nanny and not be a mum.”
