It’s not uncommon for songwriters to use other people – close friends or family as inspiration for songs they have written.
For Chris Martin though, frontman of British band Coldplay, the inspiration for one of the tracks on their latest album actually came from another performer – Katy Perry.
Their latest album ‘Ghost Stories’ has been a huge success for the band and features a number of big hits including ‘A Sky Full of Stars’.
For Chris Martin, who spoke recently with Beats by Dre’s Beat x Beat podcast he explained that inspiration for the track came from ‘Roar’ songstress Katy Perry.
The Coldplay frontman explained that ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ was inspired the song structures on a number of her hits over the years.
Martin said: “I’ll tell you the truth: I was listening to a lot of Katy Perry. A lot of her songs have the same chord sequence the whole time.”
“Your body feels comfortable with them and then the melody’s changing on top so there’s a groove you really get in to and then also you’re kept interested” he added.
He went on to add that after hearing how she used that technique he thought that was “an amazing way of doing songs”.
Chris Martin went on to speak about how electronic dance music also had some inspiration towards the way the track was constructed.
“That song really ended up being inspired by EDM, which some people turn their nose up and then you go to see an EDM thing and people are together and having the best time.”
He concluded by saying: “So I was like f**k it! I love that stuff. So I wanted to have a song that comes from that world.”
