Comedy highlights this Christmas

There are some great comedy shows coming up this Christmas so here’s our round up of the best of the best.

Sunday 21st December

Clash of the Santas, ITV1, 9pm.

Robson Green and Mark Benton reprise their roles as feuding brothers-in-law Colin and Howie. This year, Howie’s playing Santa, first as a last minute replacement in a massive shopping centre grotto and then, as a result of that success, he’s asked to represent England at the World Santa Championships in Lithuania.

Colin’s gutted but manages to tag along as Howie’s supporter, but there’s a catch; the only way he can go is if he goes as an elf, a girl elf with bells on his shoes. But embarrassing costumes are the least of Colin’s problems…

Russell Brand’s Christmas Ponderland, Channel 4, 11.10pm.

Russell lets rip about Santa Claus and the familiar routine of over-indulgence at Christmas. I wonder if he’ll be ringing anyone…

Monday 22nd December

The Good Life: Silly But It’s Fun, BBC2, 7.30pm.

Margo’s Christmas wasn’t delivered by Harrods so she must settle for a home made yuletide where paper hats are literally made from the papers and lunch is a scrawny chicken and home made wine. Here’s a clip from the timeless comedy…

Father Ted: A Christmassy Ted, Channel 4, 10pm.

Poor Ted and Dougal, along with lots of other priests, find themselves lost in Ireland’s largest lingerie department with hilarious consequences. It’s so sad that Dermot Morgan died and that so few episodes were made. Here’s a clip from this classic episode.

Tuesday 23rd December

Rab C. Nesbitt, BBC2, 9pm

Gregor Fisher returns after ten years of a Rab-less wilderness for this one off special that sees Rab finding religion, sobriety and learning to cook!

Mock The Week, BBC2, 9.45pm

Right after Rab, we have a special festive edition of this hilarious show with guests overseen by Dara O’Briain.

Shameless, Channel 4, 10.50pm

Re- run of the Shameless Christmas special in which Kev poisons half the estate with his knock-off meat. A classic episode that is still funny no matter how often you watch it. Here’s a clip in which Lillian is getting on Yvonne’s nerves at the shop…

Christmas Eve

Shrek The Halls, BBC1, 7.30pm

Shrek just wants a quiet Christmas with Fiona and their kids, but as ever, donkey has other ideas. Brilliant animation featuring the voices of Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy. Here’s the trailer…

My Family, BBC1, 8.30pm

We’re back with the Harper’s for Christmas but as always, it’s not going to go smoothly as Ben makes the mistake of buying Susan a vacuum cleaner for Christmas then changing his mind and getting her a necklace. However, when he finds the same necklace at half price in another shop, chaos ensues as he tries to get a refund and buy the cheaper one.

Greatest Christmas Comedy Moments, Five, 9.30pm

This show is a countdown of, as the title hints, the greatest Christmas comedy moments including Morecambe and Wise, Only Fools and Horses and The Office.

Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special, BBC1, 10pm

It’s Christmas Eve and the Wests join the Shipmans for one of Mick’s famous turkey dinners. Smithy can’t wait to spend his first Christmas with baby Neil, but doesn’t bank on Dave Coaches tagging along and playing happy families with Nessa. Jason and Bryn meanwhile have a heart-to-heart about “that” fishing trip and Gavin and Stacey’s revelation to Pam and Smithy doesn’t quite turn out to be the Christmas present they were expecting.

Christmas Day

Blackadder: Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, BBC2, 7pm

It’s 1850, Christmas Eve and Ebenezer Blackadder is visited by his loathsome ancestors. Great comedy starring Rowan Atkinson. It’s a repeat but still hugely funny. Here’s a clip

Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf And Death, BBC1, 8.30pm

In this new W&G masterpiece, we catch up with Wallace and Gromit who’ve opened a new bakery called Top Bun. Business is booming, not least because a deadly “cereal killer” is targeting all the bakers in town and so competition is drying up. Gromit’s worried though that they may be the next victims but Wallace doesn’t care – he’s fallen head over heels in love with Piella Bakewell, former star of the Bake-O-Lite bread commercials – so Gromit’s left to run things on his own when he’d much rather be getting better acquainted with Piella’s lovely pet poodle, Fluffles.

Here’s a clip from it…

The Royle Family: The New Sofa, BBC1, 9.30pm

This will be the highlight of the day for me as we catch up with the Royle family this Christmas. Our Antony’s got Denise’s kids for Christmas so he won’t be in it but the rest of the family will celebrate Christmas in true Royle tradition; on the sofa! And what’s more, inspired by Nigella’s cooking programme, Denise attempts to cook Christmas dinner… oh dear.

Blackadder Rides Again, BBC1, 10.30pm

Rowan Atkinson and the cast of the legendary comedy series Blackadder are back for a one-off documentary special this Christmas. Blackadder Rides Again features the iconic cast in a documentary to mark 25 years since the original BBC transmission of the much-loved sitcom, first broadcast in 1983.

It also includes the first-ever in-depth interview with Edmund Blackadder himself, Rowan Atkinson, about his personal experience of being involved in the sitcom and its phenomenal success. Set to join Rowan are the core cast and writing team who have gone on to become some of the greatest names in entertainment, both in the UK and US. These include, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Richard Curtis, Ben Elton, Miranda Richardson, Tim McInnerny and Tony Robinson.

Boxing Day

Harry Hill’s TV Burp Review of the Year, ITV1, 7pm.

Harry takes a look back at the last year of TV in his own irreverent style, including mickey taking fun from Holby City and Coronation Street.

BBC2 from 8pm: Dad’s Army, Morecambe & Wise, Generation Game and Two Ronnies

There’s a real feast of yuletide nostalgia tonight on BBC2 with the classic ‘Turkey Dinner’ episode of Dad’s Army, the Morecambe and Wise Christmas special from 1975, the 1973 Christmas episode of Generation Game and finally, the Two Ronnies special, Old Fashioned Christmas Mystery. Good stuff!

Fonejacker, Channel 4, 11.40pm

Seasonal japery from the awesome fonejacker including George the scamster, Terry Tibbs and Mr Miggins.
