Coronation Street copycat killer sentenced to 16 years in prison

It was reported last year that a teenager mimicked the deathly actions of Corrie killer John Stape – who was played by Graeme Hawley – to murder a woman with a hammer.

However, it can now be revealed that the boy in question, who is just 14, is Daniel Bartlam, and it was his own mother that he murdered in a brutal attack.

Daniel battered his mother Jacqueline about the head and face, and later set fire to her body.

The Sun reports that Daniel had hundreds of video clips on his computer featuring graphic scenes from horror movies, as well as clips of killings carried out on Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and of course, Coronation Street.

The paper adds, “Bartlam also studied websites with titles such as How To Get Away With Murder.”

And four days before killing his mother, he wrote a soap script about “Daniel” murdering a woman named “Jackie” with a hammer. The character in his script then covered up the crime by starting a fire.

When police and fire services arrived at Daniel’s home, he was outside with his six year old brother, and he told emergency personnel that he’d been woken by a masked intruder who threw a hammer at him before torching the house.

However, the fire was brought under control, enabling police to make some shocking discoveries in Daniel’s room, one of which was a picture of a woman with knives in her eyes and the words, “Die bitch” written above it.

When Daniel finally told police the truth over what happened, he revealed that his murderous attack was prompted in a row about new trainers. He claimed his mother had called him “a f**king freak” during the argument.

Yesterday, at Nottingham Crown Court, judge Mr Justice Flaux sentenced Bartlam to a life sentence with a minimum of 16 years to serve before he can apply for parole. However, worryingly, that means he could be out of prison by the time he’s 30.

After yesterday’s verdict, Detective Chief Inspector Kate Meynell said, “The boy planned and carried out what he thought was the perfect murder.

“Maybe one day he may explain what happened. The whole thing has been chilling. He spoke in court about what he did without any remorse.”

Meanwhile, Jacqueline’s parents issued a statement which reads, “Daniel attempted to make out during the trial that Jacqui was a bad mother, which couldn’t be further from the truth. She loved her boys.

“There are no winners here because not only have we lost Jacqui, but we have lost Daniel too.

“The most difficult part for us — and something that only Daniel can answer — is: Why?”

And an ITV spokesperson said, “ITV takes careful steps to ensure that pre-watershed drama is appropriate for a family audience and the Stape murder scenes in Coronation Street were fully compliant.”

Here’s a clip of Daniel – which he uploaded to YouTube himself – as he toyed with his new computer…
