After months of speculation that her character, Stella Price would be killed off in the Rovers return fire in Coronation Street next week, the actress who plays her, Michelle Collins, has revealed she has signed a new contract with the show taking her up to next year – ruling her out of the fatality count due to hit our screens.
As fans of the hit ITV soap will know, a roaring fire is set to burn the epic Rovers Return pub down to the ground next week taking with it the lives of two Weatherfield regulars.
One death so far confirmed is that of Sunita Alahan, played by Shobna Gulati, who is set to die in the fire after passing out in the pub cellar after a row with Stella Price (Michelle Collins). Stella is also trapped inside the fire, and is attempted to be rescued by hers, and Sunita’s ex, Karl Munro (John Mitchie).
Michelle Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre in the award-winning soap, revealed on ITV chat show This Morning earlier this week that only two people will die in the fire, despite many reports suggesting there could be up to three or four.
And, as we reported earlier this month, Tony Hirst who plays fireman Paul Kershaw, has been axed from the award-winning show, which leads us to believe that the second death would be his, given his profession.
And now Michelle Collins, who plays Stella, has revealed to TV Times that she is most certainly not in the death count, explaining that “she is really enjoying” her time on the show, and is very pleased with her new contract.
Speaking to the publication, Collins discussed the impact of the fire on her character, which almost certainly does not include death, saying:
“Stella literally loses everything in the fire, so her nice dresses have all gone. People in the cast have been asking me, ‘Can I have this?’, ‘Can I have that?’
“But it’s been great, and it felt like starring in a mini-blockbuster. Two people die in this fire. It’s a big shock to the system and it’s going to totally change the dynamic of Stella’s relationship with Karl.
“She takes stock of her life and makes some big decisions about the future.”
Coronation Street is due to air these epic scenes on Monday, March 18 at 730 and 8:30 PM on ITV1/ITV1 HD.
