In wake of his recent dismissal from the award-winning ITV soap Coronation Street, the future is looking a tad bleak for actor Chris Fountain, with many believing he has blown his chance in the industry for good – or for at least five years.
Fans of Fountain, who has played Tommy Duckworth since 2013, will know how he was sacked after producers discovered that he had appeared in numerous videos on YouTube as his alter-ego “The Phantom”, rapping about raping a girl and committing acts of extreme violence.
Fountain was immediately suspended whilst the incident was investigated, during which time he made a public apology stating that he was “deeply ashamed by the lyrics” and that he had “not done anything like it since, nor will I,” adding:
“I would like to sincerely apologise for any offence I have caused.”
However, following the suspensions of fellow cast mates William Roache and Michael Le Vell, who play Ken Barlow and Kevin Webster, who both are awaiting trial for actual rape, the network decided that a strong message needed to be heard with regards to Fountain’s behaviour, and the suspension was made permanent.
Almost immediately following his dismissal rumours began circulating that Fountain would go straight from Corrie over to the current series of Celebrity Big Brother in a bid to win back the public’s love, but as that didn’t happen he may have to wait a long time to get another chance according to the Daily star who claim that both ITV and BBC have deemed him unemployable for the next 5 years.
An ITV executive reportedly told the paper:
“The decision taken [to sack Fountain] was 100% the right one. He has blown it.
“If anyone takes a gamble on him in the next five years, I will be very surprised.”
Meanwhile a source from the BBC reportedly commented to the paper:
“His phone won’t be ringing with offers, that’s for sure. What on earth was he thinking?”
Of course ITV and BBC are not the only networks, and Coronation Street is not the only soap that Fountain has starred in.
Before his Tommy Duckworth days, and even before his Dancing On Ice appearance Fountain captured the hearts of girls everywhere playing the part of Justin Burton in Hollyoaks.
Justin was last seen driving off into the sunset after years of playing out some of Hollyoaks most controversial and hard-hitting storylines to date, but his son Charlie remains on the show, currently being looked after by the husband of his aunt Nancy (who is his legal guardian), whilst she remains in police psychiatric custody following her alleged attempts to kidnap him, and her own son Oscar – so this could be a very good time for Justin to make a comeback!
In the meantime we would like to cast your minds back to Fountain’s glory days on Dancing On Ice, and that spin which made him a permanent fixture on the live tour show for many years after, in the clip below:
