We all knew it would only be a matter of time, now that Wendy Crozier was back on the scene, before Ken Barlow’s eye would wander in Coronation Street, and this may just well be the proof that it does!
Fans of the hit ITV soap will know how many moons ago, Ken’s (William Roache) marriage to Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) was left in tatters following an affair he had with Crozier, damage that both he and Deirdre considered irreparable at the time.
They did, however, eventually go on to put it behind them and remarry, settling back into their simple, yet humble family life, but when Wendy turned up on the board of Governors of Betty Street infant school, we all knew that meant the peace wouldn’t last.
Ken was approached by the headmaster to join the board, but when he, or more relevantly Deirdre, realised that he would be back in contact with the now widowed Mrs Papadopoulos, he was made to try and stand down from his role.
However, after a heart to heart with both Ken and Wendy, who almost sounded sincere that she had no interest in rekindling old flames, Deirdre decided she could trust her husband, and allowed him to keep his position, whilst warning him, whole-heartedly that she would be watching him like a hawk!
However, Wendy is about to prove she hasn’t changed that much after all, when next week she makes a pass at Ken, but you may be surprised at the outcome!
The situation arises when Ken (foolishly we might add) decides to go back to Wendy’s house to offload his troubles after a particularly gruelling governors meeting. However, after one too many to drinks he falls asleep on her sofa, where Wendy makes it creepily clear, whilst he is out for the count, that her feelings for him have not been extinguished in the slightest.
The next morning Ken is mortified to realise his mistake at staying out all night, and vows to fess up to Deirdre and hope his honesty helps convince her nothing happened.
Unfortunately for him, however, things take a bit of a turn when Wendy makes a move on him. Ken is disgusted with Wendy, and tells her blatantly that he is “happy enough” (such sentiment) with Deirdre before blasting: “I don’t find you attractive and would happily never see you in my entire life again!”
This does not go down well with Wendy one little bit, and as devious as ever, she sets about making sure Deirdre hears her very distorted version of events before Ken gets a chance to tell her the truth.
Things are going to get very messy indeed!
Watch all the drama unfold next week on ITV1/ITV1 HD.
