Things are really heating up in Coronation Street at the moment, but whilst we all sit and wait for the fate of Tina McIntyre to play out on our screens, executive producer Stuart Blackburn has teased the future of a few other characters too.
Fans of the hit ITV soap will know that Tina (Michelle Keegan) is set to meet her maker soon at the hands of one Weatherfield regular, but whilst that dramatic storyline plays out dominant on our screens, there are other dramas continuing for those not involved.
One of the big back-burners is that of Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and her new infatuation with homeless girlfriend Maddie (Amy Kelly), and Blackburn has now revealed that Maddie is here to stay.
Sophie first met Maddie whilst serving up Christmas dinners at the homeless shelter with mum Sally (Sally Dynevor). They didn’t get off to the best of starts, with Maddie stealing Sally’s handbag and then later assaulting her partner whilst trying to rob her house.
Despite all this, however, Sophie saw something in Maddie and after a slow start the pair finally became a couple a few weeks ago.
Several arguments, uncomfortable meal times and exposed lies later, Sophie found herself following Maddie to the homeless shelter she lived in, but soon came home to mum and dad when the realisation of street life took its toll.
But if you thought that was the last we would see of Maddie, you would be wrong, as Stuart Blackburn explained in a recent Sun TV Magazine interview:
“Amy Kelly as Maddie Heath is a keeper. But it’s important our writers don’t confuse her with Katherine Kelly’s Becky McDonald. The instinct with a character like Becky is: ‘Where are we going to find the next her?’ But you’d end up doing shadows of former characters.
Meanwhile, on the subject of Roy Cropper and his sadness following the death of his wife Hayley, Blackburn went on to insist that he would not be setting Roy (David Neilson) with someone else anytime soon, explaining:
“We are now building a new friendship for Roy, but as long as I’m producer, he will not have a romance with anyone,” he said. “If that’s the only story we can give Roy, we’re a bit crap at our job.”
Blackburn finished with a few other teasers, revealing that Gary hits his ‘lowest point’ ever, Roy takes action that surprises even him and Ken returns to Weatherfield after Tina’s passing.
Coronation Street continues tonight at 7.30pm on ITV1 / ITV1 HD – Watch Hayley’s emotional exit in the clip below:
