We reported recently that Coronation Street actor Phillip Lowrie had been “shocked” to learn that his character Dennis Tanner was being written out of the soap.
At the time, the details of exactly how Dennis would exit the Street weren’t known, but it’s been reported today that he’s set to leave after falling for Gloria Price (Sue Johnston) who’s also set to leave Weatherfield in the New Year.
As we saw on the show’s double-bill of episodes last night, Dennis’ wife Rita (Barbara Knox) was angered as she watched Gloria flirting with Dennis as they bonded over their project to have ageing rocker Ritchie play a gig at the Bistro…
And it seems Rita was right to be suspicious about the pair as we’re set to see Dennis embark on an affair with Gloria, and he’ll then leave the Street having told Rita that he’s in love with Gloria.
A show insider told the Mirror, “Things are going to get messy.
“Rita will get her heart broken and Dennis really falls for Gloria, who gives him a lot of attention.”
The insider added, “Rita has had a lot of bad luck with men.”
When it was first revealed that Phillip was being written out of the show – he was one of the original cast members and returned to the soap 43 years after first leaving – another show source said, “Philip is shocked by the news.
“He didn’t see it coming at all, but he thinks the writers didn’t think his character was viable any more.
“He will be dearly missed by all the cast.”
A Corrie spokesman added, “Dennis won’t be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return.”
Will you be sad to see Dennis leave? Especially as he’s evidently going to leave poor Rita heartbroken!
We will of course keep you posted on the plot twist when we hear more, but for now, here’s a look at what’s coming up on the show’s Christmas Day episodes…
