Following the acquittal of Coronation Street star Michael LeVell following unproved allegations of rape, bosses have denied the rumours that his character Kevin Webster is due for a Christmas return.
LeVell, real name Michael Turner, has been off our screens since February when he charged by police and awaiting trial.
On-screen his character’s absence was explained as an emergency trip to care for his father who had a heart attack, but right from the off bosses promised a big storyline for the character to return with should he be found not guilty.
LeVell’s trial concluded earlier this month, with a jury finding him not guilty of rape or sexual assault of a minor, and since then the rumour mill has been in overdrive with people trying to guess the circumstances and date surrounding Kevin’s homecoming to the cobbles of Weatherfield, with many believing Christmas would be the perfect setting.
However, a spokesperson for the hit ITV soap has ruled this possibility out explaining to PA how the earliest that LeVell can return in 2014 as the Christmas plots have already been planned and leave no room for additional storylines.
But rest assured that when he does return it will be with a bang as both LeVell and ITV have hinted that they will be collaborating on the details of Kevin’s return.
In the meantime LeVell has many opportunities to keep himself busy. Not only is it predicted that he will be joining Piers Morgan on life stories, but it has also been rumoured that he will be taking part in this year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Elsewhere on the Street and Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, has revealed that he doesn’t think his character’s decision to buy back the Rovers Return is a good one!
Fans will have watched current Landlady, Stella Price (Michelle Collins), announcing to her family last night that she has decided to sell the Rovers, unable to shake the unhappy memories left by her husband Karl.
As previously reported Steve McDonald is chomping at the bit to get his hands on the pub again, but in the excitement fails to mention his plans to girlfriend Michelle (Kym Marsh) before making Stella an offer, and Simon Gregson who plays Steve thinks this could land him in bit of trouble, as he has been explaining to itv.com:
“Stella doesn’t think it is a great idea. She knows that this is not something he should do as a secret. She tries to warn him, but he doesn’t want to listen. He just thinks Michelle would love it. He thinks he is being romantic, that it is better than buying her a diamond ring.
“In his mind, he remembers The Rovers as happy times. He has conveniently brushed the affair with Becky under the carpet, and also when he kissed a man he thought was a woman. Steve has ‘forgotten’ all that, but it is obviously paramount in Michelle’s mind.”
“Running The Rovers might not be the top of her list of priorities. On face value Steve is buying the pub for her, but there is no doubt that he likes the idea of standing behind the bar and being at the centre of the community.”
Steve isn’t buying the pub on his own though, his mum Liz (Beverley Callard) has helped, which paves the way for her Weatherfield return, on which he commented:
“Well not only has he bought The Rovers secretly, he has enlisted his mum’s help and kept that a secret too. Steve and Michelle are the licensees and he thinks Liz will be a silent partner – but then she arrives in Weatherfield!”
