Ben Price has suggested that the upcoming rape storyline affecting Carla Connor, will also have a huge impact on his Coronation Street character Nick Tilsley.
The actor was speaking about scenes which will see the factory boss attacked by her then fiancée Frank Foster, after she calls off their wedding and declares her love for fellow alcoholic Peter Barlow.
Ben thinks the horrific incident will end up bringing Peter and Carla closer and result in Nick rekindling his affair with Peter’s wife Leanne Battersby/Barlow (Jane Danson).
He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “I don’t get involved in that storyline straight away. Frank and Carla will play out the situation completely separately from the rest of the love square situation, as it were. I think soaps should be about these strong storylines and tackling these issues. I’m sure it will be done very well. We haven’t started filming yet and I don’t think I have any direct involvement in it. I think if Carla does admit to being in love with Peter it could finally open the doors for Leanne and Nick to be together.”
The 39-year-old screen heartthrob insists the “love square” between Nick, Peter, Carla and Leanne has the potential to keep the ITV1 soap’s viewers gripped for weeks to come.
He added: “The love square, so to speak, has worked really well and I think the audience will want us to keep revisiting it. It’s that, ‘Is it going to happen? Is it not going to happen?’ ongoing situation. The main question will be if Peter ends up staying with Leanne or going for Carla. All these questions are still unanswered and it’s great to keep going back to that.”
