Coronation Street Spoilers: Tony Hirst has been axed from role as fireman Paul Kershaw – could he be the second Rovers fire casualty?

by Anna Howell

As more details about the upcoming Rovers Return arson storyline emerge, it has now been revealed that Tony Hirst, who plays fireman Paul Kershaw in the hit ITV soap, has been axed from the show.

Paul first came onto our Coronation Street screens back in 2010 as the married fireman that Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) began a controversial affair with behind the back of his dementia suffering wife, Lesley, after he rescued her from having her head stuck in railings on top of Underworld factory on her 50th birthday.

The Paul, Eileen, Lesley love triangle was one of the hardest hitting storylines the show had seen, tackling a whole different side to dementia, and coming to a dramatic climax when Lesley died under Eileen’s care.

Since then Paul and Eileen have settled happily into domestic bliss in Corrie, but according to the Sunday Mirror newspaper, this is to be short lived when Paul dies in an upcoming storyline.

It is not yet confirmed as to whether or not Pauls death will be linked to the much-anticipated arson attack on the Rovers Return, but with only one of the deaths confirmed so far as being Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati) and the other casualty still yet unknown, Paul’s job would make him a rather obvious candidate (or is it too obvious, could this be a red-herring?)

A Corrie spokesman reportedly told the publication: “It’s a big year for the character of Paul. He will be at the centre of some explosive storylines which will culminate in a dramatic departure.”

According to the publication writers at the hit soap had decided Paul’s story had been taken as far as it could, as Tony, who has also starred in Channel 4 rival soap, Hollyoaks, had initially been brought in for the s Alzheimer’ storyline, which is a shame as we had got used to seeing Eileen happy for once!
