East Is East actor Jimi Mistry – who recently wed Strictly Come Dancing star Flavia Cacace – joined the cast of Coronation Street late last year in the role of Khalid ‘Kal’ Nasir, and he’s proven to be so popular with fans of the show that the soap’s bosses are now to introduce his family too!
And it’ll be a groundbreaking moment for the soap as the Nasir clan will be the first Muslim characters to move into the nation’s favourite street.
But according to the Daily Mirror, the show’s executive producer Stuart Blackburn is “surprised” that a Muslim family hasn’t been represented on the show before now.
He said, “Kal and his son and daughter live with his mum and dad…
“So we’re going to bring them on to the Street.
“And that’ll be the first Muslim family that Corrie’s ever had. Bizarre isn’t it?”
He continued, “I’m loving Kal. We’ve heard a lot about his kids and now we’ve cast his dad, Sharif, who’ll be played by Marc Anwar.
“Now Kal is going to open a gym in a complex with shops and restaurants. By stealth we’re going to introduce his family.
“Sharif is retired and is not rich but has made enough money.
“You can imagine his wife going: ‘You’re no longer going to work 12 hours a day, you blithering idiot’.”
The new storyline see the construction of a new set – of a gym – being built at the show’s headquarters in MediaCity, but somewhat controversially one would imagine, though the Nasir family are Muslim, they’re apparently going to be shown drinking in the Rovers with the pub’s regulars.
The paper states, “Muslim experts have been consulted over this decision.”
A Coronation Street spokesman said, “All aspects of their lifestyle, culture and religion has been researched.”
We’ll let you know when we can expect to meet the new Corrie family, but for now, here’s a look at what’s coming up in tonight’s episodes…
