Coronation Street: Vicky Binns joins the list of hard-up former stars!
It’s been reported today that former Corrie star Vicky Binns – who of course played Molly Dobbs, who died during the tram crash – is hoping to find work hiring herself out as a “celebrity friend.”
In a move that’s common among former TV stars, Vicky of course charges for personal appearances…
But where it’s more usual for celebs to arrange appearances at the opening of things – supermarkets, shopping malls, or in the case of Kerry Katona, an envelope – Vicky’s USP is that she’ll turn up at your wedding.
According to The Sun, Vicky advertises in a bridal magazine, saying that for £3,000, she’ll spend two hours at your wedding, chatting with your guests.
A show insider told the paper, “It’s a shame, but times are hard for actors.”
Well, maybe not that hard at £1,500 per hour! However, this story did make me wonder what had happened to other Corrie stars who were written out of, or left, the show…
Well, let’s start with Ken Morley, who played Reg Holdsworth. His career has nosedived somewhat, and since he left Corrie, he had a role in the failed sitcom Hardware, and has also appeared on Celebrity Fit Club.
However, he’s perhaps best known post-Corrie for advertising double glazing on TV.
Another fallen Corrie star is Bruce Jones, who, since leaving the show, has split from his wife, become broke and homeless, and has struggled to get audiences at his stand-up comedy gigs.
Bruce of course played the role of Les Battersby, who was last seen heading out of Weatherfield to be a roadie for Status Quo.
And finally, Adam Rickitt, who of course played the original Nick Tilsley…
Adam left Coronation Street in 1999 to launch a career in music, and his first single, I Breathe Again, reached a respectable No.5 in the UK pop charts. However, his follow on tracks, Everything My Heart Desires and Best Thing only made it to No15 and No.25 respectively.
Adam then decided to move to New Zealand, but in September 2007, Adam was arrested and charged with shoplifting a block of cheese, a bottle of HP sauce and a jar of coffee from a supermarket in Auckland supermarket. He claimed it had all been an honest mistake.
He later decided a career in politics was the way forward, and in October 2010, he was a guest reporter for the breakfast show Daybreak, covering the Conservative Party Conference from Birmingham.
Little of note has been heard of him since…
Are there any former Corrie stars you know of who’ve died a career death after the show? If so, spill the beans!
