Katherine Kelly, who played Becky McDonald in popular ITV soap, Coronation Street, until earlier this year, has landed a presenting role on ITV’s This Morning!
Kelly, who won Best Exit at this years British Soap Awards for her characters happy-ever-after departure to pastures new, will host a four-part mini series in the award-winning day time show, called Kelly’s Heroes.
Kelly’s Heroes is due to start on June 11 and will feature Katherine touring the country meeting the nations unsung heroes and charity workers.
According to reports in the Mirror newspaper today, Kelly was approached by ITV bosses, out of the blue, and asked to go for a screen test, and after that, and a very productive meeting with show producers, she was offered the job.
An ITV source told the newspaper last night: “Kate was immensely popular with Coronation Street viewers, and ITV bosses thought she’d be a natural in front of the camera, if given her own format.
“Kelly’s Heroes will be screened on Mondays and the hope is that it will lead to other things.
“Kate is one of ITV’s golden girls and has a big future.”
Kelly left Coronation Street back in January this year, after her character, Becky McDonald, emigrated with her new man following the break down of her marriage to Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), and has since appeared in the highly acclaimed Mr Selfridge, as well as a stint in the theatre where she is currently wowing audiences and critics alike in Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops To Conquer at London’s National Theatre, not to mention Coronation Street execs making their desire for her return to the cobbles very apparent!
Kelly said: “When I left the show I made it clear that I wanted the door to remain open so I’d be able to return.
“They’re always asking me to go back and I think that one day, I will.
“I have so many happy memories from working on The Street and I do miss those on the show.
“But I’m really excited about the This Morning project, although I had no idea just how difficult presenting actually is.
“I got to meet all these ordinary people doing extraordinary things – all oblivious to how inspirational they all are.
“It was very humbling.”
