Coronation Street’s Tony Hirst reveals that Paul is hiding more than one secret!

by Lynn Connolly

As viewers of Corrie will know, last night, Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) spent the night with her new boyfriend Paul, but what she doesn’t yet know is, he’s married!

Her lodger Marcus (Charlie Condou) spotted Paul in the supermarket with his wife, and in forthcoming episodes, he’ll spill the beans about what he saw to Eileen…

However, Tony Hirst, who plays the philandering fireman, has hinted that his character’s wife isn’t the only secret he’s harbouring.

In an interview with Soaplife, Tony first discussed how much Paul likes Eileen.

He said, “He likes her a great deal; I think he likes her verve and her sense of humour…

“She seems very upright, compassionate, solid, and he has several soft spots for her.

“He’s not out on the prowl, it’s just coincidental that he meets this woman and gets on with her very well; they share many similar things and he’s very at ease with her.

“Besides being attracted to her of course!”

Tony went on to say that Paul has no idea Marcus is onto him, so he goes on a date with Eileen as planned…

He said, “He has no idea he’s been rumbled which is why he keeps his next date with Eileen. But it’s not all that it seems.

“When he’s with Eileen it’s very much a sanctuary for him, it’s a place of comfort and a place of excitement where he wants to be.

“He wants to be honest with her, but it’s very difficult for him. And so he’s trying to balance protecting himself and protecting her feelings as well.

“But he’s a bloke – so he’s not very good at it!”

And when Marcus spills the beans to Eileen about his suspicions, she goes to Paul’s house and catches him there, red handed with his wife.

Of that, Tony said, “It’s a shock to Paul – and a threat to him. He’s not a serial player who’s just in it for himself.

“He has got a moral code and he’s wrestling with that. He wants to be honest with Eileen – and yet he can’t be.”

However, despite being rumbled, Tony says that Paul wants their relationship to continue.

He said, “It’s not just a whimsical thing – it’s not just that he wants to get Eileen into bed.

“He’s obviously got a real need, he’s doing it for a reason.

“He doesn’t know her well enough and he doesn’t feel that he’s able to explain the situation as he would want to.

“He has tried to speak to her, but it has just not been possible. He wants to explain, but he can’t.”

See the drama between Paul and Eileen unfold in the rest of this week’s episodes.
