Corrie: Ben Price says Nick Tilsley and Peter Barlow are the “new Mike and Ken!”

by Lynn Connolly

As fans of Corrie will know, Nick Tilsley and Leanne Barlow have been back together for a few months now – they were of course formerly married in the late 90s – ever since she got custody of Peter Barlow’s son, Simon…

However, as Leanne (Jane Danson) is about to discover, she’s still in love with Peter (Chris Gascoyne) despite the fact that he ended their marriage in order to begin a new life with Carla Connor (Alison King).

Peter and Carla of course left Weatherfield temporarily earlier this year, but they’re now headed back, just as Nick is about to propose to Leanne…

And while speaking to What’s On TV about the love-square storyline, Ben Price who plays Nick has revealed that his character and Peter are set to become the “new Ken and Mike”, referring of course to the adversarial relationship that ran on for years between Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) and Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs) with whom Ken’s wife Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) had an affair.

Ben began by explaining that Nick’s jealousy of and towards Peter begins even before Peter and Carla return to the Street.

He said, “Nick starts to notice something different in [Leanne’s] behavior, and he doesn’t know what is going on…

“So he starts probing her and probing her until eventually she tells him that her divorce from Peter has come through.

“Immediately Nick is suspicious and wants to know what else she is keeping from him… The alarm bells are ringing for him.

“He doesn’t understand why she has kept it from him. He is concerned that she still loves Peter.”

He added, “When he picks her up on it she vehemently defends herself and insists it means nothing to her, but all Nick is hearing is that she still cares.

“He just gets to the end of the happily ever after and up pops Peter. It’s like Mike and Ken all over again!”

And of what attracts Nick to Leanne, Ben said, “Leanne for him represents a certain amount of respectability, she is strong, he fancies her, he has always loved her.

“It is a bit like the girlfriend you go back to on Friends Reunited. ‘We started something, let’s go back.’

“It looks fine on a picture and that is what Nick likes.”

Will Leanne accept Nick’s proposal? And even if she does, will she go through with the wedding?

Well, we’ll have to wait until the end of the year to find out, but for now, here’s a reminder of Nick and Leanne’s first wedding day, when Nick was played by Adam Rickitt…
