Corrie boss wants Kat Kelly back already! And Simon Gregson on “idiot” Steve McDonald

by Lynn Connolly

It’s been reported today that Corrie’s executives wants Kat Kelly to return to the show – and her role as Becky McDonald – even though her final scenes haven’t even aired yet!

However, they will do, on Monday to be precise, but while speaking to the Daily Mirror about Kat’s departure, producer Phil Collinson said he’d “love” for her to return to the show.

He said of a possible return for Kat, “I’d love that. I remember being a viewer when Sarah Lancashire as Raquel came back.

“What an amazing piece of TV that was. It felt so important and iconic. I read it was going to happen and thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s genius…’

“And it delivered. It was everything you wanted it to be. So I’d love to do something like that with Katherine.”

Of Kat’s last day of filming, Collinson said, “They were genuine tears for all of us. It’s a close team. You have to be when you’re making that much television.”

Meanwhile, Simon Gregson, who of course plays Becky’s ex, Steve McDonald, has said that he thinks his character is “an idiot” for being taken in by Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) yet again.

While talking to the PA about Steve and Tracy’s wedding, Simon said, “At the time of the wedding, Steve doesn’t really love Tracy.

“He’s deeply upset about losing the children, that’s 80 per cent of the reason why he’s getting married, the other 20 being Amy.

“He just wants to get the wedding over and done with and get out.”

But of Steve’s gullibility where Tracy’s concerned, Simon said, “I think he’s a complete idiot, he gets himself in the most ridiculous situations but he’s such a nice guy, he wants to do the right thing all the time.

“The problem with him is he wants an easy life, he hasn’t got the gumption to stand on his own two feet.”

Simon concluded the interview by saying how much he’s going to miss Kat Kelly.

He said, “It’s never good when someone who’s become a really good friend of yours leaves, because you miss your friends.

“When they leave it’s not very good, but we’re in touch all the time.”

And don’t forget, ITV will air Farewell Becky on Monday night, after the dramatic wedding showdown.
