Corrie debacle – since when did Weatherfield become Salford??
As you may have noticed in last night’s double-bill of Coronation Street, two of the show’s characters made reference to Salford…
On one occasion, Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) told his departing girlfriend Rosie Webster (Helen Flanagan) that he was “A Salford lad”, and of his café, Roy Cropper (David Neilson) told Milton (Robert Vaughn) “It’s a Salford backstreet.”
After the show, fans took to Twitter, eager to discover why the sudden reference to Salford was rather forcibly mentioned and then reinforced.
One person tweeted, “Twice in tonight’s #Corrie they’ve called it Salford not Weatherfield.
“Have they moved the whole street overnight?”
Another asked, “Why is everyone on Corrie suddenly mentioning that they live in Salford??
“I thought Weatherfield was meant to *be* Salford??”
However, one of the show’s writers, Jonathan Harvey, replied, “it has always been set in Salford, Weatherfield is a ficitonal borough of Salford, has been since ep 1″
But when other Twitter users pointed out again that the setting for Corrie has always been Weatherfield, Harvey reiterated, “Weatherfield has always been a district or suburb of Salford and not Manchester.
“I was being loyal to the original episodes. For those of you convinced by references to Salford tonight in Corrie.
“Weatherfield is and always has been a district of Salford, not manc”
Personally, I can’t remember even once when Salford was mentioned prior to last night. Can you?
That said though, here’s what Wiki says of Corrie’s location…
Tony Warren created Coronation Street in 1960, and based the show on Salford, close by the television studios where it is produced.
Like Salford, Weatherfield is a former industrial town, with most of its infrastructure dating from the cotton industry, starting in the Industrial Revolution.
Housing in Weatherfield is also typical of its former industry, with the majority of dwellings being small Victorian terraces although like Salford many of the old terraces were demolished during the 1960s and 70s to make way for high rise developments.
This change to the architectural skyline of Weatherfield was demonstrated during the opening titles to the series during the early 1970s.
Eek, the thick plottens!
