As fans of Corrie will doubtless know, The Royle Family star Sue Johnston has joined the cast of the show in the role of Stella Price’s mother, Gloria, and today, we have pictures of Sue’s first scenes on the nation’s favourite Street…

She makes her debut on September 5th, and starts out rather much as it seems she intends to go on – by making a huge row!

Her arrival is announced when Stella (Michelle Collins) and her daughter Eva (Catherine Tyldesley) are woken in the small hours by a hammering on the pub doors.

Racing downstairs, assuming there’s at least a fire somewhere, Stella’s stunned to see her mum Gloria on the doorstep, complete with cases!

Last Stella knew of her mother, she was running a bar in Spain, and though Gloria won’t go into details about what’s happened, she insists to Stella that she just needs to “lay low” for a while.

So, now fully awake, Gloria, Stella and Eva have a catch up, during which Gloria hears all about her daughter’s split from Karl (John Michie) and she’s livid when she hears that he’s now living with his mistress Sunita (Shobna Gulati).

However, the next day, and even as her anger peaks when she confronts Karl – and gives him a slap round the face – she’s plotting how to engineer a reunion between Stella and Karl, but when Stella finds out that her mum’s been meddling, it’s her turn to be livid!

But Stella has to put her own issues to one side as she introduces Gloria to her other granddaughter, Leanne (Jane Danson)…

While speaking to the Radio Times recently about Gloria, Sue said, “She’s the sort of person who takes pride in shooting from the hip.

“She wastes no time in ruffling feathers when she arrives in Weatherfield, which she thinks is a dump.

“As well as being blunt to the point of rudeness, she’s also a terrible flirt, which is terrific fun and a great combination to play.

“I’ve just filmed some scenes with Barbara Knox because Rita is one of the first people Gloria goes into combat with, and she was wonderful.

“Because the characters are so familiar and I’ve watched the show as a fan, I have to make sure I call people by their real name.”
