In soapland, very few expectant mothers ever make it to hospital to have their babies, and over the years on Coronation Street, newborn residents have arrived in the factory, the back of a cab and the shop…
And next month, Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and Kirsty Soames’ baby girl – who they’ll name Ruby – is going to make her debut in The Rovers!
The dramatic – and of course, soapy fast – birth scenes begin when Kirsty has a blazing row with arch nemesis Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) in the pub.
Tina’s fury at Kirsty is prompted after the scheming ex-copper tells Julie Carp (Katy Cavanagh) that Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) is selling his flat, which is of course where Tina and Tommy Duckworth (Chris Fountain) presently live.
Kirsty of course hopes Julie will buy it and in so doing, make Tina and Tommy homeless, but while Kirsty protests her innocence, Tina’s having none of it as she knows exactly what game she’s playing…
While discussing the drama, Natalie Gumede, who of course plays the deranged Kirsty, told All About Soap, “Tina just goes mad and Kirsty continues to goad her, while playing innocent to the rest of the pub.
“Tina grabs Kirsty and there’s a scuffle – it’s not a proper fight, but Kirsty falls back on to a table.
“Tina just wants to make Kirsty listen, because she keeps walking away from her and laughing.”
However, the uproar brings on Kirsty’s labour! Natalie explained, “It becomes apparent immediately that the baby is coming – the pain is acute and her waters break.
“Marcus is there and, as a midwife, he’s able to recognise that this tot is going to come pretty quickly.
“Kirsty’s a very strong character and she’s a tough cookie, while Marcus is great. Tyrone turns up as well, which helps immensely.”
She added, “Tina’s painted as the bad guy – from the outside, it looks like she’s attacked a pregnant lady.
“But Kirsty won’t be happy until she knows where Tyrone is every minute of the day.”
We’ll see Kirsty’s labour and baby Ruby’s arrival on Sunday, September 9 on ITV1.
