As fans of the show will know, Keith is currently starring as Ciaran McCarthy, but in forthcoming storylines, Ciaran’s relationship with Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) is going to hit the rocks when he gambles away the money they saved for their wedding.
And amid Michelle’s commitment to Underworld, and the revelations that she and Ciaran want rather different things out of life, their engagement is set to crumble, and Ciaran will leave Weatherfield.
In reality, that’s because Keith wants to spend more time with his family – his son Jay recently starred in Hollyoaks – but he hasn’t ruled out a future, more long term, return to Corrie.
Speaking to The Sun about his decision to only stay on Corrie for a short time this year, Keith said, “It wasn’t an easy decision…
“I sat down with my wife Lisa and she said, ‘Keith, I really need you here and the kids need you here’.
“[My daughter] Mia is autistic and very set in her ways. Routine is vital in her life.
“And it’s my son’s first year of major exams at school. He’s doing the equivalent of his GCSEs this year.”

He added, “Lisa does the rugby run, swimming run, ballet run and school run for the kids. She has been brilliant but, at the same time, the kids need their daddy around.”
And of the prospect of moving his family to England from Dublin, to enable him to work full-time on Corrie, Keith said, “Moving the family over to England from Dublin wasn’t an option just yet because Mia needs to finish her school year where she is at the moment.
“So I came in to see the Coronation Street producers and explained I was going to have to sit this year out in Ireland.”
Keith, who’s also starred in RTÉ One soap, Fair City as Ringo, added, “Hopefully, if they want me back the following year, then I might consider relocating the family to the UK next summer.
“They were very supportive, so we’ll see what happens.”
