Fans of Coronation Street will of course know that Sunita Alahan is currently in a coma in hospital and is of course not going to make it…
Sunita was overcome by smoke and trapped by the blaze after she caught Karl Munro (John Michie) deliberately setting the fire. He then pushed her down the cellar steps – where she fell unconscious – before making good his own escape from the burning pub.
And while speaking to the Daily Mirror, Shobna Gulati, who of course plays the role of Sunita, has revealed that filming the inferno was as terrifying as it looked on-screen!
She said, “I did as many of the stunts as I could myself…
“I was terrified when the stunt co-ordinator said, ‘Ok Shobna, there’s going to be an explosion followed by a fireball.’
“There were no special effects or CGI, this was real fire.
“The heat was absolutely horrific. I could feel my skin starting to burn and my jacket was steaming.
“It was very hard work and definitely scary.”
Next, when asked if her final scenes are as dramatic as those of Sunita trapped in the fire, Shobna said, “It’s going to be an amazing send off. It’s like Sunita’s version of the action movie Die Hard.
“It was difficult for me to watch the Rovers burning. Sunita worked there as a barmaid, so she has a personal relationship with the pub.
“I first joined the cast 12 years ago and have spent a lot of time developing this character.
“Believe me, when this storyline is done, Sunita will be talked about for a long time after she’s gone.”
Shobna added, “I’ve been very emotional and tears have come quickly.
“Corrie has been brilliant for me, I love the camaraderie. I’m leaving behind so many good friends, such as my best buddies Kate Ford and Kym Marsh, who I share a dressing room with.”
And of saying goodbye to Jimmin Harkishin, who of course plays Sunita’s estranged husband Dev, Shobna said, “I cried when Jimmi told me he would miss our unspoken on-screen bond, which is very rare and special between actors.”
She added, “I’m convinced that, technically, I am actually married to Jimmi in real life because when we filmed Sunita and Dev’s wedding ceremony, there was a real priest who said actual Sanskrit vows.”
And finally, of why she decided to leave Corrie and of what lies ahead, Shobna said, “I thought it would be nice to put Sunita to bed and try my hand at something else.
“I’ve reached a point in my life where I don’t want to return to Corrie. This is a new chapter.
“I’ve brought up my son Akshay, who is now 18, so it’s time to spread my wings.
“I do have a job lined up, but it’s secret at the moment.
“I’ve also penned the first episode of a sitcom with my writing partner Tracey Dell, whom I met while having colonic irrigation, of all things.
“I plan to audition for roles in America at some point – and maybe I could be Daniel Craig’s next Bond girl!”
Aww I’ll miss Shobna as Sunita. Will you?
Here’s a reminder of the fateful moments before Sunita met her fate in the pub…
