Corrie star Sue Nicholls on why Audrey agrees to flee Weatherfield with Lewis!
Coronation Street’s Audrey Roberts is of course hopelessly in love with Lewis Archer, and would do pretty much anything for him…
And while speaking to Soaplife this week, Sue Nicholls, who of course plays the smitten hairdresser, has revealed that even when Lewis (Nigel Havers) seems to have returned to his old scheming ways, Audrey still wants to be with him.
So much so that she’ll even agree to flee Weatherfield with him when he confesses that a woman he previously ripped off for thousands of pounds has caught up with him, and she wants her money back!
Sue began by saying, “Audrey doesn’t care what her family think – she loves Lewis, he loves her and that’s all the matters.”
She then explained that the latest drama over Lewis begins when he disappears on the way back from their holiday in France…
Sue said, “He just vanishes on the Eurostar on the way home. Audrey doesn’t know what to make of it.
“It doesn’t add up as they’ve had a wonderful, relaxing holiday. She tells herself he’ll come back with a perfectly reasonable explanation.”
However, Audrey soon meets a woman called Penny, who tells her that Lewis ripped her off.
Sue said, “Penny reveals that she was engaged to Lewis, who promised her a new life abroad, but then did a runner with 10,000 pounds of her money.
“She says she spotted Lewis on the Eurostar and that’s why he fled.”
But Sue revealed that even after what Penny’s told Audrey, it doesn’t change her feelings for the former escort.
She said, “What Penny says changes nothing for Audrey. She claims he probably ran off because he was shaken and frightened.
“Penny tells her to open her eyes and not be a fool, but Audrey’s adamant that Lewis does love her.
“She’s shaken after her encounter with Penny, and Gail and Nick won’t let it lie.
“They insist if Lewis did love her he wouldn’t have disappeared for days without so much as a phone call.
“The reality of that hits Audrey and the emotions come spilling out. She feels like an old fool again.”
Sue went on to say that Lewis then reappears, and Audrey’s faith in his reformed character is vindicated when he confesses all.
She said, “He actually tells Audrey exactly what Penny told her.
“He’s horrified when he hears Penny has tracked him down and says he’ll have to go on the run again. He says it’s his only option.”
Sue added that Lewis then asks Audrey to go with him…
She said, “She says she will, but she has a lot of doubts about it.”
However, their plans are soon scuppered! Sue said, “Her family turn up and catch Lewis with her…
“And worse, Penny turns up, too, and threatens to call the police.”
Audrey resolves the issue by handing over £10,000 to Penny, but when asked if the whole drama might make Audrey think that it’s all an elaborate con, Sue said, “No, she believes Lewis has changed.
“Audrey’s had a glimpse of what her life would be like without him in it and she couldn’t bear it.
“He means more to her than anything else in the world and Audrey will do whatever it takes to keep him in her life.
“She loves him and she’s convinced he loves her, too…”
