This new two-parter, in the current run of Channel 4’s Cutting Edge strand, takes a lively look at the fact that, in the UK, “live-in” child care has reached new heights.
Now more than ever, families are employing complete strangers to help look after their children and their homes. Tonight’s opening film follows three families going through the stresses and strains of finding the ideal carer for their precious offspring.
Staff are hired and fired, language barriers hinder good communication and cultural clashes take root. The Scott-Darlings hire Perin, a Turkish au pair who is desperate to find the sea on her first day alone with the kids, but she can barely speak English and has no idea how far it is.
Single mum Gilly Holloway has to give Anna, her young Brazilian au pair, lessons in basic cleaning, cooking and child care, while the unconventional Jennings hire the first au pair they meet. And her interview takes place on a ride-on lawn mower! How will they all fare, and what will the live-in help make of their new “families”?
